Considering the lack of actual testing on the commercial product, yours is likely to be just as good (or useless) as what they sell.

I just got a leash this year. I’ll stick with the real deal it’s a very quality built product from what I can tell. I spent 400 bucks on a hydrowave that also might be a gimmick no problem so the leash was a no brainer. Especially since my cousin wrecked a brand new boat last year hitting a submerged tree and the engine ended up on the back deck from the impact. If he had a leash maybe his motor would have been held down a bit more

Best place to buy an Atlas Jackplate

Seems to be pretty simple to install.

    Leash
Great idea lacking engineering back up for performance.
No warranty. No expected life span.
    No independent lab test results.

So this connects to the plate and not the transom . On the accidents that have happened what broke to allow the motor to come into boat ? I would have thought this would connect to the actual hull .

Mine is connected to the transom bolts. Some mount to the side of the plate where power poles would go. In photos usually it’s something on the motor that breaks or the hydraulic plate breaks leaving the rest of the plate attached to the boat still. All I know is that when I trim all the way up with my plate up that leash gets tight and if I really push the trim all the way to the limit I’m going to break something so if I do get in an accident that should be the greatest distance my engine will go. One of these days someone will wreck with one and let everyone know what the real deal is. Until that time I’m sure no one wants to volunteer their boat to an accident of that magnitude. I know I believe in it and will continue to until someone says I wrecked with a leash and the motor still ended up in my boat.

Any reputable testing lab can setup for testing this Leash product for impact retention of an outboard. Mounting points will be the biggest variable.

Brett can you post some pictures of how yours is mounted?
You said the product gets tight at full trim. This must also limit your tilt function? Shallow water engine tilt up and ability to place a Motormate engine toter?

There you go, thinking like an engineer.

Of course if the testing didn't support their claims, they'd be on pretty shaky ground continuing to sell it. Oddly, their website has no evidence of testing of any kind or even anecdotal reports of "saves".

I can't see any reason not to have one even if it hasn't been tested. Common sense says any resistance at all is better than none. If it slows the momentum down just a fraction it could be the difference between a prop in your face or a prop that misses your face by an inch.

That's not necessarily true. Physics gets weird sometimes and adding something untested that "seems" like it might help introduces an extra variable that could make it worse.
