Yamaha 150 hpdi Ranger 188vx. Trim Gauge question

How does the trim gauge know where the position of the motor is ?
I’m having a problem with the gauge as to where in the cycle it is I see it move when it’s trimmed all the way out or motor trimmed up but it doesn’t move too much. Over the winter go for the purpose of not wanting my water pressure gauge to freeze I disconnected it and disconnected the fuel gauge and trim gauge And left it disconnected. Today first time out the trim gauge was not indicating right. Any ideas or back to my first question how does it know where it’s at.

There's a sensor on the motor near the steering tube. If it worked before you disconnected the gauge, I'd say maybe you didn't get it reconnected properly.
