depth on my lowrance and talon don't match up

I had my boat out today and my lowrance was showing a depth of 7.5 feet but when I deployed my talon it went all the way to the 10-12ft light. Something don't seem right about this, my talon is probably 6-8 inches above my sonar. Does this happen to you guys too?

The last light doesn't mean it's all the way down. It's just far enough to be in that part of the light. It's the same on my 15s. They will show the last light around 11 or 12'

I don't think those lights are right is what I'm saying.

If you have ice to take on you can compare units to see what they interpret depth to be, som will say 7.1 while others say 6.8 and others yet say 7.5 all measured from the top of the water.... depth is relevant to your boat only... in addition if the spike sticks in the bottom 8" thats 3/4' farther than sonar, once my 12' talon went 12' while the boat was only floating by a inch or two... that some soft mud

Have you physically measured the actual depth of water and compare that to the Lawrence and Talon?
It would be interesting to see the difference and if it gets worse at depths

I haven't measured with a tape measure but I did it with my fishing line and the lowrance seems to be spot on with the depth

Talons go into the mud/ soft bottom. Sonar does not. I have had my 12’ talons go into the bottom 3-4’ before. You can’t compare sonar readings to your talons. Your talons go as deep as they need to go, to HOLD you. They don’t just pierce 1-2” at the bottom surface and stop.

Any sonar is reading the depth from the transducer to the bottom so, depending on where that is, your 7.5 on the display can be 9 feet for example.

Also, shallow water anchors deploy with some noticeable downward force, they will penetrate all substrates (except rock lol) to some point and go beyond the bottom depth.

With my 10 foot Talons, I don't bother deploying if my sonar says anything over 8 feet, never gets to bottom or if it does, not with enough force to hold me at times. The only reason is the fact that my transducer is already 16 inches or more in the water so I know that and never compare the two.

Those lights are a reference, not a depth finder.

This is true, and maybe the case if the OP has not adjusted the sonar settings on his Lowrance units.

I used mine yesterday front lowrance said 7.5 and console said 8.2 and my 8' talon locked down on my boat so depends on bottom substance I think

Yes talon and pp will hold in just 1" of stick if the weather and the bottom is correct
