Champion Mean 15 - Have you ever fished out of one?

Champion Mean 15 - Have you ever fished out of one? What did you think of it? Does anyone know where can find one to buy? I think I like the idea of one for fishing by myself in small backwaters.

May be OK for fishing alone, but I had a 176 and it got kinda crowded with 2 guys fishing out of it. Rod storage may be another issue if you use 7' or better rods.

Fun rig to run. Hardcore fishing? Nope. Average weekend angler in relatively good water, yup. 3 People tourney style fishing out of it? Fugetaboutit.

I still have a 88 mean 16 w a 90 merc. It was my first bass boat and I fished a lot of club tourneys out of it. Yes it was crowded but still got me on the water. If you are use to a small boat you will have no problem. If you have a large boat now, I think you will have a hard time adjusting. For a small boat I always thought the lay out was really good and considering size had a lot of storage. For fishing by yourself it does good and you get a champ dry ride.

There was no Mean 16 until the 90 inch beam 161 came out in the 90's. There was only the Mean 15 from around 80 until the mid 90's. Your rig is a 16'8.

I have a 1982 registered as 15’8”. It’s dual console (originally a fish and ski) that now has a deck extension all the way to the consoles. Has a 150 black max on it, 80# trolling motor. Fishes great. Fits 7’ rods in the lockers. Nimble, fast, I’ll guarantee, hands down, there is not other bass boat on the planet under 16’ that will handle rough water like it. Been out in 4-5 footers every year in St Clair, and it’s always a dry ride. However, just bought a 204 for the extra space as all 3 of my kids like to fish. My mean 15 will be for sale soon. Had it for 12 years, I’m going to miss it.

We have rough water here on the lower Columbia River!
Please contact me when you want to sell your mean 15! It sounds perfect for what I want to do.
I have a 1992 Champ 201 DCR that I will keep the rest of my life. We fish out of it every week. It is a great rough water boat. Family members have done & will continue to some fun local tournaments out of it. But I am now retired and a mean 15 has been on my bucket list. I won't hurt & it will probably help to have two boats.

Matt do you know the max HP rated for the 16' 8" boat ? I think mine is 110 on the coast guard tag. I just don't think that boat is over 16'. Did they make the mean 15 in 88 ?

From 1976-87ish they were 150 rated until the engine makers switched the HP rating from the block to the prop then they switched em to 140 rated.

I'm pretty sure they made the Mean 15 until early 90's. Lea would know better, she has the brochures.

Fun indeed. Can be a handful at times, it demands your attention when you push it

I'm guessing mine is a mean 15 then. I don't believe its over 16' and its definitely not 16'8". Max horsepower on cost guard sticker is either 100 or 110. When Lea gets here she will set me straight.

In 1988 there was a series called Super Champs. 15'6", 16'8" and 17'6". Rated HP 90, 140 and 150 respectively. No "Mean" anything. I don't have the 89 brochure, but in 1990, there is a Mean 15. It is possible certain models were made after the brochures came out. Have seen that in a couple of cases.
    Hope this helps.

Matt, why did you tell them I had the brochures? I wanted them to think I was brilliant...LOL!

I do not have any brochures prior to 1985. Also, the brochures were not for individual models. Instead, they showed a brief description of each model for a given year,

    Thank you Lea.
My bad. I was assuming that the model 156 M was a Champion 15 mean. So it is a Super Champ in 88? Not that nadaguides is the end-all for brands/models, in '87 and '89 nadaguides does list 15 mean, in 88 it is a 156 M.
