    Simple battery and wiring questions...

I'm adding an Ultrex to my 2017 Tracker 190, which means I'm adding a second trolling motor battery. The boat came stock with an Interstate SRM-27. I cannot seem to find anyone near me who has that battery. Can I use an SRM-27 battery from a different manufacturer or would I be better served just getting two new batteries (maybe 31s)?

Also, I noticed that the trolling motor wiring at the batteries is 6 gauge, but it is 8 gauge at the bow. Anyone have any clue where the change over occurs? Why would they do this...just to save on 6 gauge wire? I don't get it.

The change of gauge is a few feet from the receptacle. Their is a wire to wire connector that joins the two. I suspect that it is due to the receptacle vein designed for 8 gauge wire.

Sell the interstate battery, and purchase battery from Walmart. They come with a extended warranty so you can exchange them for new ones every year.

That sounds like the right thing to do to me...

Actually the first part is pretty good advice. The srm 27 interstates arent much to write home about and a 29/31 series deep cycle battery is a better choice anyway. Plus you really need to start with 2 fresh new batteries. The older battery will brind down the new one. I would do exactly the same. I get 5 years a pop from my everstarts cant beat them. Interstates....not so much. Love their automotive batteries not impressed with their marine/rv. As far as exchanging every year thats not a practicie i recommend.

Great honesty there. Is that how you were raised or did you turn out this way on your own?

I tried the Walmart batteries, once. I now have Interstate Pro's, best deep cycle battery I've had in my boat! Was told Interstate no longer makes this battery but I haven't had to verify as they keep performing.

Ditch the current battery if it's over a year old. You need 2 batteries of similar age and size.

Because it is nothing less than theft, defrauding a merchant with a false warranty claim. It doesn't matter if it is a person or a business. I'm amazed that you don't recognize that.

I suppose that if you had a business to run, you would want customers like that.

Good luck trying to exchange a Walmart battery around here. They stick some crap tester on them that almost always shows good and then tell you your battery is fine. I have a less than two year old 29DC right now that wont hold charge enough to start my motor overnight. Tester showed good so no exchange.

Hook an incandescent bulb to it and discharge to beyond dead. So it won't recover while just sitting. Then take it to them.

Seriously? You have to ask? What ol' Clayton said was 100% pure fraud.

It literally amazes me the general lack of character in this world.
