24p 4 blade tempest.
I had a 171DC with a merc 135 and 6" jackplate that pushed my boat 62mph,

Tempest is a three blade. Sure you didn’t mean trophy?
So how much do you turn it?
That 4+2 motor doesn’t turn big rpms it needs to be at 5,200 wfo.

Pat, it has a ballistic 13.5" 24 pitch XL on it at the moment. That's what was on it when I got it.
-
23p would be my guess? What RPM are you getting with a 24? a lot of prop for a 115 IMO

I dont think I am getting much more than 5000
-
Would a 3" plate do me any good?
-
6” rapid jack would do the most good.

How about that prop Pat, 23 pitch where I need to be?

22 WORKED lazer II is your ticket. You can't run it as high as a V6, you want it right at 5,200 with your regular fishing load. That'll give you all it's got.

So I have put a Laser II on it. It wouldn't get on plane so I got bent plugs to put in it yesterday. It rockets on plane insanely fast, but I lost an enormous amount of top end. The boat would not do a hair over 34mph GPS which is a 13 mph loss from the Tempest 4 blade. I guess I am going to put the tempest back on and try vent plugs in it. If that works I'll have a new Laser II 22p for sale...
-
That doesn't sound right. What rpms did it turn? Was that holding the throttle down with full trim?
What was the pitch of the lazer?

As Pat said above, there is no Tempest 4 blade. Probably a Trophy.
-
Proper setup takes time. Internet setup is difficult because I can’t see what you’ve got or hear what the boat is saying.
So the details need to start.
Where did you get the prop? Is it stock? What’s the rpms when you’re wfo?

I meant Trophy, sorry it was a late night. It is a 22p Laser II. I got it from BC Props. It has no imperfections. With the PVS plugs in it, it will launch onto plane. It turns about 4900 RPM or so the best I can tell on the analog gauge. I have thought about taking the wedges out to see what happens from there. With them at full trim it wants to blow out. I think maybe running without those it may stay down in the water. It does not lift the boat out of the water at all like the Trophy. I can run that Trophy and once on plane it runs really well, but coming out of the hole is horrible. I have this motor running better than it ever has in the 10 plus years I have had it. I am not sure how much I can set the motor back with the current steering etc. I think I may be able to get it back 3-4".

Hi Folks Just an FYI on this boat.
I have a 1997 171Dc with a Mercury 4+2 115, LotsOFTackle. Batteries 2 M27's 1 M24 1 person 240lbs-ish ha ha . Live wells empty. I have a 6" plate set at 3.5 below the pad, I have a new stock 22 Trophy. 2 VPS plugs. I had to add the IV flo tourq hub kit to get rid of the clutch rattle. This currently runs at 4900 RPM at 51 MPH. Hole shot good and holds great no cavitation in turns. Not looking for top speed just good overall performance. Thanx to Pat and this forum I am a happy ChampioN owner!

My first 95 171 had a mariner 125 on it, my best prop was a 24 trophy. No plugs helped holeshot. By myself, lite load and half tank of gas it would approach mid 50’s.
But it was a solid safe dry ride.
