Re: What motor do I need to do 80GPS with 201FS (dsly1)

I used to own a 289FS with 175 Johnson. Dude, you've got the wrong hull if you are looking for speed. Had a mechanic tell me he had a 289FS with a 200hp Johnson, took off the trolling motor, windshield, all but one battery, and could get 70mph with just him and 10 gallons of gas. If you want an 80mph Fish and Ski, get an Allison. Otherwise, save your money and enjoy being able to run down the lake without a helment at 60mph during 25 degree weather. Guys at winter tournaments used to tell me I had an unfair advantage! Your 201 is a nice boat with a good hull, but please understand the inherent limitations of that design.

to be honest dump the 201 and get a allison or bullet. your 201 is not going to handle a 300 and it sure aint gonna do 80 mph with anything less and the drag from the hull/windshield and open area behind is major. if you are wanting to go 80+ either spring for a new boat or forget it I had a 201 1997 sc bass boat and with a light load, and only me in it with a 1999 225ho ( basically a 245 hp) on a good day would do 76 mph gps before it tried to fly out of the water , mine was a bass boat also not a fish and ski so air flow was better then yours.

Maybe its just me.... I think a 201FS/300 Vmax would suprise some people. I am not saying 80 but I bet upper 70's (77-78ish?) could happen with a good, very light set-up. I would love to give that rig a spin

As long as the jet ski is stock he would be able leave them since most seemed to be governed to around 70.

    I see a 2009 250Etec for sale here and a 2004 yamaha 300 hpdi with a 2011 series 2 factory powerhead replacement

Both around $8000, which would be a better fit a STRATOS 201fs with bob's 6" jack plate ?

If it is rigged for OMC go with the HO. If you are re-rigging go with whatever.

I have a 1998 201 FS with a 07 225 etec and a hyd jack plate. I run a DAH 25 gade or a DAH 26 Raker and with me loaded she runs 68 to 70 plus gps. I think 75 is possible if I strip the boat down but it would be a handful to drive. I would be on edge going 80 to say the least. Here's a pic I just took a couple of weeks a go and it was hard to drive it and take this pic.

Get a hold of Glen B on here. He is an Evinrude pro staffer and may offer you a deal on his 2014 with full warranty.

Are you sure you are getting everything out of this set up? If there is 4-5 mph left in set up, prop, etc, then we'd know better what other set ups would give you.
what is you current GPS speed, engine, jack plate size and height to pad and prop?

    10 years later

I’ll settle for 70 GPS any ideas ? New tech surely would have yielded options etc ...

Nope. New tech doesn’t make an old heavy boat any faster. It just uses less fuel when not going fast.

You just need to lower your expectations or you're gonna lower your bank account a lot, then have your expectations lowered.

80? Nope sorry man, not gonna happen. Do the math backwards. Figure our max rpm’s you would want to run on your engine, get the gear ratio of the lower unit, use 12 for a slip number and plug it into a prop slip meter and type in 80mph. Then you can get the pitch of prop you would need to run. My guess to run 80 you will be spinning a 29 pitch prop. And good luck getting out of the hole. I have a 201 PE, was running 225 HO (250 ho) and ran a 28 pitch raker 2 and would see about 7mph at 6k rpms, I don’t think a 29 pitch prop would get the boat on plane and be fishable.
