    New boat

Asking a question for a friend. Hoping some of you may have been through this. He’s buying a 2015 basscat from an individual, not a dealer, in Arkansas on Friday. He’s not sure about the taxes and how all that works. Does he pay Arkansas sales taxes on the boat or does he pay Louisiana taxes? Or no taxes at all except on the trailer? Can someone shed any light on this at all for us. Thanks. Ryan

I did the same. Had to show the taxes were paid in ark and only paid some taxes for trailer here in Louisiana. They change the rules a lot and he will just have to check when he goes to do paperwork.

He needs to get three bills of sale. One for the boat, one for the motor, and one for the trailer. The trailer bill of sale goes to the DMV for a plate, he pays taxes there for the trailer. He needs to go to wildlife and fisheries with the bill of sale for the boat for a Louisiana registration. I bought a new boat out of state and had to also go to the Louisiana dept of Revenue to pay state sales taxes and the local School Board office to pay local sales taxes.

Used boat out of state from individual. Get a bill of sale for trailer only, then boat and motor etc. You have to go to dmv pay tax on the trailer and get your plate. You have to take the other bill of sale along with a form on the ldwf site to the local sales tax office usually in the school board office and have them sign the form showing no tax is due on this sale. You then have to take the form and go to the state department or revenue and have them sign the form stating no tax is due. You will need the boat registration for the state its coming from. send in the ldwf form for registration, the form signed by the tax depts, and other paperwork they ask for and you are good to go. At least thats how it was a year or so ago. You will pay tax on the trailer only, not on the boat, motor and accessories if you do the paperwork properly. If it is new or from a dealer you pay tax on the whole rig. form is r-1331 I think
