Running shallow with motor trimmed up

I see guys idling out of shallow areas with stumps with the motor trimmed way up. I have found myself in similar situations where I do the same thing, but I don't know how much I can trim up. I have an Evinrude G2. What part of the lower unit needs to stay in the water to make sure I'm not running it "dry"?

I just make sure I'm above the bottom of the boat. Usually that's when it starts shooting water up behind you. As long as the prop is submerged you will still get water pressure and you will here it if you trim a little high

If you hear the exhaust coming out of the hub you’re trimmed too high. As long as I see the telltale water stream it’s all good.

Just keep an eye on the water pressure gauge.

    By far the best answer.

I have never looked at that gauge. What should it read? Do I get concerned with pressure rising or dropping?

Probably the most important gauge. Not familiar with the Rude pressure. Just don't let it drop more than a pound of two of what it would be in a normal position at the rpm being used. Ask about pressures on the Evinrude forum.

I've gotten to the point where I leave my gauge on water pressure for pretty much the whole time. If water pressure is good then everything else seems to be good too.

You've never looked at your water pressure gauge?!! You should probably make a habit of checking that and get to know what is normal for your motor, so you have an idea of if something is off. The pressure will go up and down depending on how much your in the throttle. Not sure what the G2s runs, but my Rude runs 8-10 lbs at idle and around 20 lbs at wide open throttle.

Just got my first boat a couple years ago. Still learning. BBC has been a huge help.

If you got 5 lbs pressure at idle speed, you're good

The most concerning in when running high and trimmed up you don’t have a good rudder as the case is high. It can cause loss of control.

honestly at idle you will get and alarm if it's heating up.
losing pressure wide open and getting alarm is bad.. at idle temps aren't rocketing up. . at idle ..

if it beeps just trim it down and temps will drop. if there's a pre stream pump is wet. also the few litres of water in block will fall down water passage if you trim too high and lose pressure which will keep impeller wet . so it wo t burn up immediately.

you can also idle In gear and walk to bow to lift rear of boat. so transom isnt so low yo wont need as much trim . you even have trim switches in bow.

i got stuck once and this saved me
