    Trailer tongue pin

Is it standard 5/8" pin for a swing away trailer tongue? I need a new locking pin. Any recommendations? Thanks Brian

If you are going to do that, just weld the thing shut. Bolts are not designed for shear loads. The threads can act as notches and stress risers when they vibrate against the coupler weakening the bolt and leading to fracture.

Bolts definitely are designed to hold shear loads, you just want to make sure the "grip" portion of the bolt is what's loaded in shear.

I bought one from Tractor supply and drilled a hole in the end big enough to accept a small lock to prevent someone from removing it at the landing.

That's absolutely correct but very few people know how to specific a bolt so it retains 100% of it's shear capacity. Most people are too concerned with being able to pick something up at the corner hardware store.

I still have the pin.... just the stupid lock fell off the end of it. I could just drill a small hole and install a lock. I do not want a bolt or something permanent. I have to break down the tongue to get my garage door to close.

Go by Tractor supply and find a tractor implement pin that will fit. It will have a hole in it you can drill out to fit a lock. Just go really slow when you drill and use cutting oil so it doesn't heat up and lose it's temper.

    Hi,
    Different question, same topic:
    I bought a used 2010 Ranger Commanche.
Swing away tongue. Lock on one side, bolt on the other.
Problem: Don't have a key for the lock.
Question: It looks like it will swing both ways (nothing funny intended).
Can I remove the bolt and use the lock side as the hinge side?
    Thanks
