Don’t have a Rectec but I can’t imagine one being better than Yoder. I have a YS640 and it is awesome. It’s a tank though.

I alsohave a REC TEC 680 and love it and have a new model of the Rec Tec Trailblazer on the way for use at the lake . But I'm sure Yoder is a great smoker also as are some others on the market .

So can someone explain pellet smokers. Whats the difference other than using pellets to say a masterbuilt that uses chips. Is there an advantage to pellets as I have been hearing more and more about them.

But wouldnt that be the same as say a masterbuilt where you set the time and temp ??

Well except for the grilling part. So they can get hot enough to actually grill? What would a typical max temp be for them. Do they have like additional heating elements or something in them to allow the grilling ?

    Maybe I need one lol.

Mine goes 180-500 in 5 degree increments, above 500 in full mode. The only element in mine is used to ignite the pellets.

I believe the difference is that masterbilt uses an electrical element to heat and the wood pellets are just there to smolder and add some smoke. With the pellet smokers, the pellets are burning and providing the heat so it's more like using a wood burning smoker.

Ohhhhhhhh ok... I didnt know that. I assumed it was jus heating the pellets with an element like my masterbuilt and just auto feeding in pellets. Guess I can see how there would be an advantage as it would almost be like cooking over a wood fire.

Might have to look into one if I find a sale somewhere.

So out of curiosity how much fuel do you use when smoking / grilling. Yes I understand it will vary depending on the temp you are trying to reach. So lets say you wanted to smoke a brisket at roughly 200 for 15 hours. Would this take pounds of pellets ??? Or say you wanted to just get a quick hot 30 minutes of grilling for burgers?

Just curious how much fuel these things use.

Also im guessing the heat comes in on one side of the grill. Are they able to maintain a consistent temp throughout the entire grill or is one side hotter than the other.

My RecTec is pretty consistent heat wise. It will be a little bit warmer on the right side but not much. It has a 40lb hopper and it will vary pellet use depending on temperature outside as well as cooking temperature. Most long smokes are about 225 and usually run about 12 hrs or so. It may be about 20lbs of pellets. Fast cooking burgers it wont use very many.
