Fair question. To drop the lower unit and install a new water pump which Yamaha recommends every two years I think it’s ballpark. I realize that you could buy the parts and do it yourself for significantly less, but I know how to do it and wouldn’t do it for much less than that. If guys want to do it themselves that’s great but at the end of the day if my shop makes an extra $50 or $100, and that means they stay in business and are there for me when I really need them, that’s money well spent.

    Good GOD!!!

I mean, ok.... it's a Yamaha. How hard can it be?

First time EVER I did one, was on a 250 Pro XS and it didn't take me an hour from the time I started rounding up tools, till the time I put everything up, poured a new glass of tea, and cut 2 lemon wedges! INCLUDING the gear oil change.

I ordered a kit for my 150 SHO and did it myself, only had previous experience doing one on a MERC and the Yamaha was simple enough. Over $400 sounds very high considering shops do these all the time, if I do mine again in the future it will be much faster knowing how it all comes apart now - I say change it yourself.

SIM sells a nice kit for the rebuild, I replaced everything since mine was about 4 years old.

this is what drives our markets fellas.
we have those shops (with usually lower overhead) that are less expensive.
we have larger shops (more employees, more lights, bigger building etc) that will be more expensive.
we have those shops who are very busy and to do the work cost more due to surrounding competition or lack thereof.
then we have the shade tree, do it yourselfer such as myself.

cant we just all get along?

Haha, now that sounds like me. But that's for the whole lower unit bearings and gears and all. The water pump is a 1 hour job like everyone else here said. You probably already have all the tools if you're over 25, and if you don't then it's a good excuse to get caught up. Worse case scenario you open it up, don't know what to do, and post pics of your progress so we can talk you through it. That's what innernet friends are for!

Just had mine done at my Skeeter dealer cost $190. On my previous Skeeter I had all work done by an independent boat mechanic, he used to charge me $120.

i just replaced a whole lower unit on my garage floor with a just a couple wrenches/sockets in under 30 minutes and shops charge crazy labor for those swaps. so i believe the price but its definately not worth that price. but shops cant pay the mechanics and stay in business without upcharging the heck out of people. so have to understand from both sides
