    225 EFI 2000-3000RPM sputter/ surge

    1998 225 EFI serial umber #OG666608

    414.9 Hours

Anyone ever come across a mid rpm engine surge or miss? Happens after take off and planed out and backed off between 2-3000 RPM

    Boat is at mechanics:
    Spark test- OK
    Throttle Positioning Sensor -OK
    Spark pugs- looked OK
    Compression Check- OK

Occasional Sneeze when idling in gear..... not sure if this has anything to do with the surging/ miss or not

    Around 36 PSI.
I would also inspect the bobbins on the stator.

    ^^^ Good advice.

Also check the BLEED lines, especially the ones hidden behind the oil tank, electrical plate, etc.

It is unusual for an engine to plane off and remain on plane in the 2000-3000 RPM range (unless you're in something other than a bass-boat, perhaps?)

Did you visually check the stator for discoloration ? Can be better than a meter test.

    +1

I would also be looking at the TPS for a "dead-spot" in that area (voltage sweep test).

One other note to make... if you speed up 500 RPM's, does this "problem" go away?

    Don,

    Sweep Test checked out good

    and ...

Seamed if I got out of the 2-3000 rpm range surge would go away but 2000 to 2500 still surged

    Discoloration of the bobbins?

    Redundant grounds?

Here's a quote from Don about "redundant grounds":

"Cheap item for you to try... and yes, I've seen it make a difference.

On the coil plate, add TWO (10) gauge REDUNDANT GROUNDS.

First one to the right-top 8mm head screw (where CDM grounds are), second one to the lower ECU "right bottom screw" (likely is a ground there now, already).

Loop the upper wire OVER the top of the block, and then install a ring-terminal so it terminates at the same bolt the battery NEG. cable is attached to.

Loop the LOWER wire UNDER the STB bank of cylinder, and then install a ring-terminal so it terminates at the same bolt the battery NEG. cable is attached to.

When done... go run it and see if there's any difference".

You may also be chasing a "transitional ghost". ALL 2-stroke reed-type engines have an RPM at which the reeds are transitioning from "mostly closed duration" to "mostly open duration".

This RPM range is usually 300-600 RPM's (depending on engine/condition), and the engine simply doesn't run well in that range. Either side of the RPM range- runs great.

There are things you can do to "move" the range or "lessen" the range, but it WILL be there (somewhere).

    Hey Guys,

    Just a quick update....

Sent injectors off to get checked out.. replaced two injectors (lean) calibrated one (rich) and are in route back to CA, Thank you Rich!!!
New reeds...all the reed petals looked good except one.....could lean sneeze cause metal reed failure?
    Bobbins look good...
Added grounds as per Don's post..

Anticipating getting it all put back together and getting back out on the water......And seeing how It goes.....

Yes lean sneeze can cause reed failure.
Hope you didn't install NEW steel reeds.
