    Question Cleaning The Grates?

What do you guys use to scrub the cooking grates, both before and after?

Any tips to make it easy? Thanks!

Just DO NOT use a wire grill brush!

Just open up the vents and let it go for a few minutes. Every now and again, a full clean burn.

This is what I do. After I'm done grilling, I like to burn off the remaining coal and wood, then once cool I scrape out the ashes and discard to the burn pit. I don't actually "clean" my grates though... If my smoker grates need to be cleaned, I remove them and stack them on my grill to be burned off at the same time.

Not sure if this technique will work on cast iron grates however my wife tosses the oven grates into a black plastic bag with ammonia. She ties the bag closed and lays it out in the sun for a day. That evening those grates come out sparkling clean.

I use the bristle type with no issue but I’ll never use the steel wool kinda again. I used it once and got a piece in my steak which I got in my throat. I have a very sensitive gag reflex so I blew me steak in the toilet. Lots of dry heaves until I could reach in an get it out. Kinda making me gag just thinking about it now.
