Ideas for Modifying Flipping Jigs Less Prone to get Snagged?

I am wondering if there is there anything I can do to make Flipping Jigs less prone to hang up on wood or grass. The cover I primarily fish around that I get hung on is lay downs/logs, pads with other grass mixed in, boulders, and standing timber with lots of zebra muscles.

Here is a list of the jigs I currently use:

    - 1 oz Strike King Hack Attack
    - 1/2 & 3/4 oz Strike King Denny Brauer Premier Pro Model
    - 1/4 - 3/4 oz Terminator Pro’s Top Secret (original models)

I’ve tried trimming the guards, fanning them out and other techniques. But the problem I am running into is the hook is catching obstructions from the side of the brush guards, not the top. So I wonder if I need to add something to the Jig to achieve this?

I am not looking for suggestions on using other Jigs that are more weedless. I am looking for suggestions on things I can do to doctor my current baits. Thanks in advance!

Denny Brauer structure jig comes through cover very well. I don't hang it up very much. Also the GRT jigs from d2lures.com. They have a one of a kind head design that comes through cover. Alot of it could be the way you're moving the jig too. When you're going through wood, soon as you feel the head of the jig bump into the branch give it a little pop then dead stick it on a slack line til it hits bottom. If you get good at "feeling" your way thru a tree top or lay down you'll get hung less. I more so finesse my way thru wood

spread or fan out the brush guard, I cut mine down removing half of them and fan them all out and have no issues

Dont use Braid, flare the weedguard, and use a jig with a flat eye especially around wood

I make a lot of my own jigs. But, when I buy some, I modify the weedguard to be line the ones I make. I pull out all of the fiber bristles and replace them with twin wire cable guards like these: http://www.lurepartsonline.com/Onlin...Weedguard.html A little super glue gel holds them in place and then I glue them in with epoxy.

I also make a few jigs with this kind of weedguard. The end clips under the tip of the hook:

In my experience, both types come through wood and weeds better than fiber weedguards.

Thanks Jeff, I was considering adding the wire guards but wasn't sure. Might be something I have to build Custom as you mentioned.

My jigs look a lot like this Stan Sloan jig. But, my weedguards usually are long enough to go past the point of the hook on each side to protect the sides of the jighook from snagging if the jig rolls to the side.

I have less trouble with the wood and rocks as I do with grass. Get hung up a lot with with punching through matted over rice or cane stalks and floating matts of algae. The odd pad stemp too. I typically fish where there's a variety of cover like that, the edges. Always seems to catch this or that from the side.

Jigs hang up, and the heavier they are, the more frequently they'll hang up. It's the nature of the beast. If you're willing to pretty much reconstruct your jig, they sell weed guards that are made of stiffer fiber. http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/weedgua...ds/345906.aspx http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/weedgua...591000002.aspx

You could also try taking some shrink tubing, cut it into 1/4" long pieces and slip it over current weed guards, slide it down against the head of the jig, and heat it so it shrinks. You won't be able to spread the weed guard as much, but it will effectively make the weed guard more stiff. You could try super gluing the fibers together at the base of the weed guard, but it won't hold up like shrink tubing will.

And I used to trim weed guards on jigs, but I did it to make them hook fish easier, not to make them less prone to hanging up.

When I am getting hung up fishing a jig around wood I know I am fishing to fast. Slow down and you can work the jig through the wood.
