Question KY and Barkley Lake Flooding? Forecasts?

Anyone hear what the plan is for the rest of the week?

The Ohio River is blown out around Louisville with big water coming down it right now. Kentucky and Barkley Dam have had all their gates open trying to empty all they can ahead of the big water coming down the Ohio.

Are they going to finally close the gates off at Kentucky and Barkley, leading to a rapid jump in elevation?

They are calling for 6" of rain between now and Sunday, last I've heard.

Where's the link the to management plan? I can't remember what elevation the river has to be at Cairo that forces KY and Barkley to stop spilling.

    Found the management plan: https://www.hsdl.org/?view&did=19793

Says that the gage at Cairo has to hit 55 ft to force KY and Barkley to close their gates completely.

Appears it's forecasted to only go to 45.5 ft, for now....

Crest for this event was 54.8 on Saturday 3/3

Will be interesting to see how this one changes over the next few days, they start closing the gates in the floodwall at 49.5 ft, last time they had to do that was 2011:

Crest for this event was 51.43 on Friday 3/2

The predicted crests keep going up and up.

TVA plans to shut the gates on KY Dam March 1st, which is in accordance with their annual schedule. I guess we'll see if they can make it that long.

April 1 is when they usually start backing up, have for as long as I can remember, is this something new?

Possibly, that's what a guy was telling me the other night, he could be wrong. Might just be a short term goal. With all the rain and downstream flooding it will be interesting if they can hit that goal.

They are doing what they can for Buckhorn. Last few days the backwater below the dam has nearly been in the high school parking lot. Outflow from the dam is as high as I have ever seen it. Corps website is not showing correctly IMO as far as the outflow they have been posting.

Cool video posted on Facebook by WPSD, drone video flying over the dam with discharge of 240,000 cfs (1.8 million gallons per second):

    https://www.facebook.com/WPSDLocal6/...IDefmpOtaMCK9M

Videos says they plan to start holding back water next week, so I guess the March 1st goal is true.

Lake has been staying right around 354.00' to 354.50' during this big discharge. Forecast is calling for another 2.5" or more of rain between now and Sunday morning.

Difference of only 23 ft between the upper pool and lower pool...that's about the overall length of a bass boat.

I believe the “holding back” comment is they are speculating that they won’t be spilling around March 1st, the operating guide still shows the water raising first week of April....

This is correct. The #1 priority of the dams is flood control, then that will dictate when water is held/released.

Last night they were saying Louisville is expected to have it's highest crest since the flood of 1997. The Coast Guard is staging in Louisville with additional boats and manpower for rescues in the upcoming days.
