I want to have a rod built for Carolina rigging

I want to have a rod built for Carolina rigging and want to use a USA blank. I want a length of 7'2" to maybe 7'6". I currently have a old Castaway Carolina Honey rig at 6'8", heavy action, 10-20#, 1/4 to 1 oz. probably a G. Loomis blank. Most of the rod blanks I have researched currently specified for that use are in a medium heavy action, 10-17#, and 1/4 to 3/4oz. Does anyone know what Mfr. would have something very, very close to that blank spec's? I looked at St Croix and their spec'd blank is 7'4" Med. Hvy., 12-25#, 5/8 to 1 1/4 oz. All Mfr's spec. their rods differently and what I'm afraid of is getting a flimsy A*s rod that is no where close to my Castaway. Looking for a Carolina rig expert to steer me to a near identical blank. Thank you folks for the help!

If you are having it built take your castaway blank to a builder who uses the CCS system of measurement. They can put you with a blank that is spot on. I don't have any carolina rods built myself so not much help for you. You are right on that each manufacturers specs will be different.

I'm definitely not a carolina rig expert and I'm certainly not an expert rod builder, so I guess I'm not really qualified to answer :-)

That being said, I built a blank on a Liberty FS764. The rod was supposed to be a "do anything" heavy application blank. It's now one of my dedicated c-rig blanks. I took it to Lake Fork this past summer and hooked into some decent 6-7lb fish and it handled them with aplomb. US made blank with pretty good sensitivity and it certainly isn't flimsy.

I'm very happy with it :-)

Liberty FS764 is a great blank especially for the price. Handles Crigs, flippin, smaller swimbaits, and Arigs all very well. Another one that is a great option would be a Hydra FL5, it's more sensitive than the Liberty and also weighs a little less. The 7'6" Liberty is listed at 2.7 oz but I've found them to be closer to 2.9. The FL5 in the 7'11" length is listed at 2.9 (no listed weight for the 7'6") but I've weighed them at 2.6.

Yes I weigh almost everything before I build it.

Quantum used to have a TE rod for c-rigging. It was perfect, graphite with a little more than a moderate taper. Perfect for lobbing the rig.

I like the MHX FP885. 7'4" heavy mod/fast. Plenty of tip but good backbone.

Would a 7'6" rod be a little to much length?

+1 St Croix are normally a bit heavier than most other brands of the same listed action.

Rainshadow Eternity ETEC72MH-SS. US made .... 7'2" .... 3/8 - 1 oz, fast action. I haven't fished that particular blank, but I have fished the same spec blank in the Immortal series. It makes an awesome Carolina rig rod and is sensitive as all get out ..... word is the Eternity's blanks are even more sensitive

Hydra = ALX Rods. Give a sponsor a try... you might find out you like us!

We have a custom build shop also, so we can tweak anything build from scratch if preferred.

We tend to be pretty good at putting people in the right rods based off how they plan to use them.

I built an amazing rig rod on an NFC IM 807, perfect for 1/2 to 1 1/4. NOT a pool cue, has a perfect tip for rigging. Spiral Wrapped with a carbon grip.

Would you go with Fuji or Kigan Guides?

I will say in addition to the liberty 764 I also have an ALX dragger. First gen I think with the eva split grips. Also use it for c-rig, flipping, heavy jigs, etc.
