    Optimax Impeller

Went and talked to a mechanic today about my sending unit...turns out a I need a new gauge... Anyway, he was saying that on a 2010 optimax I should be replacing my impeller every 2 years and to change my lower oil twice a year..

Are you guys changing your impeller that often and what about your lower unit oil?

Impellers lifespan changes with use. The more you use it the longer it lasts. If you let them sit for extended periods the fins are gonna take a set and not wanna come back. If mine sit for a while I go out and rotate the motor about 1/4 turn every month just to keep the impeller from sitting in the same spot too long. I recently did a test and went 4 years on the water pump before pressure and temperature weren't where I wanted to see them anymore. With water pressure and temperature gauges you don't really need to change them every year just because. You can see what your pump is doing and it'll let you know, if you feel so inclined to watch.

Curious as to how one turns the motor a quarter turn. Do you bump it with the key? ...BF

Check out the 2.5L forum (what your engine is) for more info including the FAQ Don referenced. Don't just change the impeller, when performing the service, you need to replace the impeller, plate and all 3 gaskets. I get the kit from Don and replace the housing too.

Why would you replace the housing if it's in good shape?

The water pump utilized on this 2.5L model has a broad-coverage kit (96148A8) that's quite reasonably priced. Enough so that if you need more than gaskets and impeller, you might as well buy the complete kit.
