Do they make an Ultrex without the built in transducer?

No, but the transducer disconnects from the cables close to the head and you don't have to use it.

2d only. Most want some type of imaging at the front, and that is why an external imaging transducer on the troller is so popular. 2d comes from the external transducer in that case. However, it is nice if your imaging transducer goes south that you at least have a 2d back up from the built in transducer of the Ultrex.

As said above, it will give 2D or Sonar only. If you want the structure scan or DI, then you would need and external transducer
