    Exclamation Swollen Hardbaits

Some very interesting stuff here from Scott Martin....would anyone know what causes this?

If you leave a clear box of crankbaits in the sun you will have swollen baits. Some brands are worse than others. Had it happen to me.

I just pulled several from my CB box that's done the same thing. I have no idea what would cause it. Larry

If your hard bait is swollen for over 4 hours you're supposed to call a Dr.

Heat. Knew a guy that had a whole box loaded with Lucky Crafts that did that. Sun caused it.

When the Plano water proof boxes with the three latches come out i thought they were going to be awesome and help prevent my hooks from rusting ,,, had one slam full of Bandit 200 crankbaits , got box out and changed one out and left it one the deck for a couple of hours , next time i opened it all my baits looks like they had swallowed a toad frog,,, totally ruined about 40 or so ,,,,,i had to chunk everyone of them in the trash ,,,,, lesson learned --no air tight boxes for crankbaits and i put the boxes right back in the tackle compartment as soon as i get the one out i need ,,

Had a box of strike king baits that did that and we’re all new out of packaging. I email strike king and they return my email saying send them back to the address listed within a week I had all new baits and they have been fine.

Yep, the sun will bake crankbaits. I had a plano box with 2 dozen Megabass x-100's and flap-slaps in there. It ruined every one.

I lost quite a few due to heat last summer. I had them in my garage stored in 3700's, and they really swelled up. My tackle is now stored in my house due to that expensive lesson.

Good video. Thanks for posting it and thanks to Mr Martin for making it.
My guess as to why it’s happening is because of a chemical reaction inside the bait. The plastic or what ever they use to weld the two halves is breaking down and forming the gas and weakening the plastic. Just my guess mind you.

Plano has a double sided CB box that is shaded just for this reason.

I drilled several small holes in my hardbait boxes to allow heat to vent. I also remove the boxes from the boat between trips in the summer.

I left a 3700 box full of rattle traps and red eye shads in the back of my Expedition on a hot summer day and I guess they must of had a hell of a party cause about 80% of them ended up pregnant. I went to the store and got a couple more plano boxes to put the babies in when they hatch. I shouldn't have to ever buy rattle traps again.
