    Combat Engineer

God bless each and all of you for your service to this great nation. My dad was a combat eng. in wwII and was at Fort Benning GA. not sure of spelling. How could i find out his service record. He would refuse to talk about it and was asked numerous times, just to say it was to bad to talk about. He has passed now and we would just like to no what he did. I have no idea where to start. Again God bless all of you for our freedom. My daughter ask me the other day, why do you thank veterans when you see them in public and i tell her that is easy, for without them we are not free.

Jaw62, I just finished going through my military files and can't find it. There is a simple form that family members can fill out and mail into either the VA or DOD and you can get all his records and even medals. Check with your County VA rep, (county govt.) and they will most likely have the form. I'm sure they will absolutely help you with it. I sent it in for myself and found out I had a few m ore medals I didn't even know about. Good luck with it. Someone here might chime in with the correct form too.

Much of my dad's wwii records burned with the building in St Louis.

I have a good idea of what he did. I am a combat engineer myself (15 years). I would not be sure 100% of what your father did, but in general I know what he/they did. If you have no luck getting his records and want a general idea of what his job probably was, just let me know.
