    Ultrex 80lb 45" shaft

I am close to pulling the trigger on an ultrex for my 1992 Ranger 482V after eating Ramen noodles for the past year to save $$. 18ft boat with a 150hp. I am currently running a 24V 65lb Minn Kota that I don't have too many complaints about so I feel that 80lb will be enough power. I have two questions,
    1) should I buy the 45" or the 52" model? I think the price diff is less than $100 but I don't want to get a 52" if it is going to be too long for my boat.
    2) will I need to upgrade my current 24" trolling motor wiring?
    Thanks

You're current wiring will be OK. Shaft length depends on what you're comfortable with. If you have a 45" now, and are OK with it, then keep the 45. If you have problems with the 45 coming out of the water, go with the 52. There is $50.00 difference in price. If you have questions you can PM, email, or call me. I can also quote you when you're ready to pull that trigger.

Absolutely, if coming out of the water is a problem get the longer shaft. I am a light weight, I'll just leave that there, if I have a 200+lb partner on the rear deck I had problems. Even with boat wakes the motor was out most of the time. Am ordering a 52in Ultrex on my new boat.
    I got nothin

I've also got a boat around the same size as yours. I have the 80 lb/45" shaft Ultrex and haven't had any issues what so ever. I guess it depends on what water you fish, as in, how rough it is. I know if I put a 52" on mine, it would be a pretty big overhang.

Just realized you were in Charlotte, thus the edit. I have fished Norman on many occasions with numerous boats, wind, waves etc. Although the TM did come out a few times, I didn't have that much of an issue with spot lock etc. Not enough that I had wished that I would've gotten the 52". I love my Ultrex and you will too. I spotlocked over a school of white bass on Norman and had a blast.

I fish Norman quite a bit. Spot lock will surely come in handy fishing off shore schools.

What are some opinions on the 80lb thrust? I am currently running a 65lb that works fine so I would assume that the 80lb would be enough power. What are the drawbacks from running an 80lb compared to the 36 volt models?

Ive got un 80# 45" ulterra on my 20.5' Procraft. Today was my first time on the water with it. 20-25 mph wind today. Big rollers out on the main lake. The TM came out of the water quite a few times but kept me on the spot (spot lock) pretty good. I think im gonna be happy with the 45" length. 80# pulled my boat around with ease, even in the wind.
