    87 skeeter 175 / 175 mariner setup

Trying to find motor height and prop size to run. My father past away 5 yrs ago and i jus started to restore the boat. Currently has a 23" quicksilver prop and 6" powerlift jackplate on it. Last time i was out in it, it ran 62 gps. Ive read that 87 was the fastest hull from skeeter so im thinking theres more speed to be made. Should i bump up to a 24" or 25"? 3 or 4 blade? Trophy? Any help is appreciated and welcomed

25 Yamaha M prop, set at 3 1/2" might can go a little higher. Skeeters need all the bow lift they can get to run at their potential. That prop will give it.

Fury won't give you the bow lift you need. I ran a 25 Tempest on a Cobra 180 with a 175 and it worked fine. I think you should be able to turn a 25. If you do go with a Fury, get the 24. They're a little stiffer than a Tempest.

So a 25" tempest would work better for me? 3 or 4 blade?

    ARGH...
Go ahead get what you want.
The M wheel is the BEST setup for YOUR boat/motor we've found. Tempest is just a bit too aggressive for the 2.5 motor and won't carry the bow as good as the M. Skeeters (not something else) run their best when you can compress air under the hull and make them run.
Now being in Idaho, you MIGHT be running at altitude, IF you are then you'll need to adjust down to compensate.

Listen to Pat, he knows his stuff. Yamaha's have the same prop shaft as a Mercury, so they're interchangeable. Oh, and they're hard to find!

Lol ok. Since this M prop is so hard to find, which is the second option you would recomend, Pat?

They are quite common. You might see it listed as a VMax prop also.

Is there a difference between a T-1 and M? Most of the vmax props are T-1

I had the same boat same year Same eng . . I ran it for 8 years . I ran a 26 chopper on it built for the boat by Mazco . That engine was very reliable . It would hall the mail back in its day . But I ran milled heads ,no exhaust cans ,Mod lower unit and improved carbs . Through hub props back then that worked on that set up was a 25 Mercury laser 3 blade prop . We never measured prop to pad ht back then it was all by rpms and water pressure that’s how we set them up . 15 to 20 lbs water pressure 5750 to 5850 rpms on stock eng . Make sure you run the highest octane fuel you can find for that engine .

    Over 2000 Ft you'll need a 23" or 24" prop.

In 87 there was a much smaller choice of props. Mazco hoss predator turbo and merc choppers was about the choice.

Now we are fortunate to have lots of choices to be able to match a prop to exactly what’s needed.

It gets confusing and it’s hard to separate facts. That starfire hull has a particular way it runs its best. That’s with lots of bow lift to carry the hull. That tendency is pretty common with Stenson designs. Once you understand the dynamics in play it helps determine what’s best for you.
