    scary!

I took my Nikkor 105 micro out to do some shot of salads. I tipped the lens up to clean the glass and saw it was shattered. My heart stopped for only a minute. I took the UV filter off and found no damage to the lens. $15.00 for a new filter vs several hundred or a new lens. I have no clue as to how it happened. Ordered the new filter from B&H. Life goes on.

    Good news Mike!
I do not use a UV filter unless the environment I'm shooting in requires it.
Never liked the idea of putting a $15 pc of glass in front of a $1500 or higher lens!
Stories like yours may make me rethink my position!

Most of the time I take the filter off before shooting then replace it when finished.

It depends on the quality of the filter you purchase. I use nothing but B+W multicoated filters. They are pricey, but you generally get what you pay for.
