Measure bottom of head to top of lower unit. Yes, my new 45" Fortrex is 3" longer than my old 42" Maxxum.

The shafts on each motor is 43.75" long. The Maxxums are classified as 42" and the Fortrex is classified as 45". The Edge is also classified as 45".

Is it possible or reasonable to change a fortrex 45 into a 52?

The 45" (standard) Fortrex and the 52 / 62" (long) use different mounts. If you mis match, the motor will not lay right on the motor rest when stowed.
