    Appliances.....what to look at?

Well, I think its time for new appliances. I haven't started officially looking but I think the dishwasher bit the bullet last night after being bandaid'ed for a while and the fridge looks like it has been through a war. Wife is leaning to a smudge proof stainless. I really wanted a Bosch dishwasher because I really liked the one at my old house but not sure about the rest of their appliances. This is what I would be looking to replace since they are are all in the kitchen and need to match:

    Double door fridge
    electric range
over the stove microwave (this one is a convection oven)
    Dishwasher
    Trash compactor

Kegerator and a Wine fridge (Dont have to replace but if we could get them to match......)

I don't want to spend a fortune but don't want to go down this road for a while any advice on what brands to to lean towards or stay away from is very appreciated.

I worked at a test and repair center and we seen a lot of Samsung and LG’s fail due to electronics issues. And the general consensus was the more frills the more issues.

    Whirlpool still going strong.

Take a look at the new black stainless appliances, they might be a little more expensive but it will make a BIG statement in style. As for brand, everyone is going to suggest you buy the brand they have but the only thing that really matters is which one has the best warranty. Then, once you've found the best warranty, buy the extended warranty that starts where the manufacturer warranty ends.

Just be aware that looks are not everything. They can cover bad electronics and look just great.

I am on my second Bosch dishwasher and wouldn't buy any other. For stand alone stoves, we prefer GE Profile with a glass top and the double ovens--one preferably convection. For the refrigerafor, they are almost generic at this time. I like those with fridge and double doors on top, fridge drawer in the middle and a freezer on the bottom. Mine is a Maytag that was custom made for Lowes, but it is the same as a Whirlpool. For over the stove microwaves, I prefer GE Profile.

You may have a difficult time even finding a trash compactor as they are out of style and seldom sold any longer.

dishwasher-- look for a brand that has a real heating coil in the bottom, this be better for the drying cycle. the other type will not dry the plastic's type dishware,

I did a search on most dependable brands of appliances in the kitchen a year ago. I don't have the site url but I recall KitchenAid and Whirlpool were the best ones on the list with the exception of Bosch for dish washers.

I just recently got this stove, and it is awesome......less heat in the kitchen, way lower setting can be used since it is more efficient, less time needed for cooking...I can boil 2 cups of water @ a hard rolling boil in less than 2 minutes...my microwave takes at least 4.

It is expensive, but you do get a lot more features too......I got it on sale too.....

EDIT: Wanted to add I am not a fan of stainless, but I wanted the features of the induction stove, so I had no choice unless I wanted to spend over 6k on a commercial unit, and I live alone, so no need to match everything. The stainless isn't too bad, as the side of the stove are black, and it's easy to clean up.

If you go with stainless, you will have to get the same brand for everything. The stainless from different manufacturers don't match. I bought Kitchen-Aid from Lowes.

I have new Samsung appliances and am not really a fan as stated above. I have had several problems with them but thank goodness have the 5 year warranty.

We got the fridgidaire induction stove and it boils water quick. Prefer gas but we are about 400 ft from the road, new gas line was just too expensive. Induction is more cost and you may need need new cookware, but it works like gas as in immediate temp changes.

Got the Frigidaire gallery fridge/stove/dishwasher. 2 years and no issues. Dishwasher is super quiet and all 3 have the no smudge stainless

Dealing with SEARS for warranty work on our fridge. Compressor went out more than 10 days ago and now have to wait for the part to come to the house and only after that can we schedule the tech to return. Which would be okay except my wife works long days and I travel for work a lot so finding a time that works is a PITA. At least we have a fridge in the garage. F Sears.

Can't help you with the brands, but can say from personal experience don't get the smooth glass top stove/range. If keeping things looking clean is important to you, they are a nightmare. You can't cook anything without leaving stains. Have to scrape and polish after every use. Most of our friends just give up and quit trying to keep them clean. We finally bought a little stand-alone electric burner for most stuff so we don't have to use the stove very often.

Induction is more initially, but I think it will be less over the long run, as it doesn't waste nearly as much heat as gas or electric. I know my kitchen doesn't heat up nearly as much now as it use to when cooking.

Gas would have been easy for me, as I have gas heat, but never liked cooking with it at all.

And I needed new pots & pans anyway, mine were no longer non-stick in any fashion they were so old.

I have no problem at all with it, and keeping things looking clean is very important to me. All I do is after it is cooled down, I spray some cleaner on it, wipe it down, and it's gone. No different from washing the dishes (yes, my hands are my dishwashers....).

I do agree tho, on a regular smooth cooktop, they are hard to keep clean.

With induction, there is almost no heat to cook the spills on like with a regular electric cooktop...I can lift the pot off, and touch my hand to the spot the pot was just sitting without burning it. It will be pretty warm for a few minutes, but not enough to burn my hand like a normal cook top or burner eye, and it doesn't take long to cool down.

We’ve got KitchenAid Architect Series II smooth top range, dishwasher, and convection microwave. Completely trouble free since we installed them 4 years ago. Excellent quality. Samsung French door refrigerator that’s been trouble free for 8 years.
Maytag front load washer and dryer. Not a single issue in 3 years.
CR isn’t always right, but they’re recommendations are a good place to start looking for what you want and like.

HA HA...I tried to get the Samsung french door fridge....but it was literally 1/2" too wide to get it in the kitchen without doing major reconstruction.

Ended up with a whirlpool double door fridge and frigidaire stand up freezer....no problems in over 10 yrs so far.

There are lots of different finishes to stainless steel fronts. I'd go for painted white or black.

We have replaced several premium line Kitchen-Aid appliances that were 3 years old (one 2 years old). They are not what they use to be quality wise.

As far as dishwashers go; Bosch all day every day. Highly recommend.

We just got a Kitchenaid induction range a few months back, and really like the induction part. Most of our cookware worked with it, but it came with a set of cookware anyway. We have an Electrolux overhead microwave and dishwasher, no complaints on these. We have a 5yr old Samsung fridge with the upper French doors and the middle deli drawer. Like the layout, but have had a couple of issues. Leaked water when new, they fixed no big problem. The ice lever has worn a bit, and you have to nudge it a little to the left about half the time or you will get water instead of ice. This happened after the warranty.

Hopefully they'll stay in business long enough to get you fixed up.

Sears Outlet is where I worked and they shut the doors.
