    Ultimate Loomis Jig Rod

Looking to buy a new Loomis 7' jig rod for 3/8-1/2 ounce jigs and T- Rigs. Should I choose the Conquest MBR844 or the NRX 854JWR?

Between those two, the Conquest without a doubt. I'm not a huge fan of the NRX 854 for 1/2 oz jig fishing. It makes a great big worm rod, but it just doesn't have the "it" feel for jig fishing. Whichever you ultimately choose, we'd be glad to get you set up with a great deal on the Loomis of your choice through The Tackle Trap, PM me anytime...

Is the 894 NRX better jig rod then?

Not a 7 footer as you said you are thinking about, but at 7'3'' the NRX873 CRR feels real good to me at those weights for Jigs and T-rigs, with its real sweet spot being 1/2 oz.

The JWR 853 and 854 are both awesome jig rods, which I fish exclusively 80% of the time. I do prefer the 854 for my 1/2 oz jig and spoon rod. I do use an 894 as well but those are my heavier cover set ups. Dan

Another vote for the 873 CRR NRX for those weights.

NRX 873 CRR and the 894 are what I use. They both work great. I've never used the 854 but a friend of mine just got one for jigs. He seems pretty happy with it so far.

873 for me. I agree with Gary on the 854- the tip just doesn't do it for me. 894 is just too stout even for 3/4 and the handle is a little too long for my taste.

I'd much rather have the CRR 873 than the JWR 854, but it's 7'3". If we're getting into 7'3" and 7'5" rods, my answer would change If you HAVE to stay at 7' or 7'1", I'd go Conquest 844 over NRX 854 for 3/8 to at MAX 1/2 oz.

If I was to go up to a max length of 7'3" would the 873 CRR be a better choice over the Conquest 844?

I tend to prefer more power over less power for fishing a 1/2 oz jig. I didn't even ask how heavy the cover you'd be fishing may be. That would have an impact as well. The CRR 873 has more backbone than the Conquest 844, so if you're fishing 1/2 oz. in heavy cover most often, the CRR 873 is a great choice, but then I'd rather have the NRX 894 if you can go to 7'5" The Conquest 844 is plenty powerful for a 1/2 oz jig in general though and is a great multi-purpose rod too...

It will be used mainly to pitch jigs and soft plastic around docks and cypress trees. We don't have much thick vegetation other than pads.

I had a Dobyn's DX 745 and it seemed a little stiff for 3/8 so I swapped it for a DX744 and it seems a little to light for a 1/2. Just looking for more sensitivity.

Any NRX or Conquest is significantly more sensitive than a Dobyns DX rod in my hands. Both those were 7'4" rods, so if you're ok with those, just get the NRX 894c JWR and be done with it. If you're fishing around pads, those stems can be hard to get a good fish out of without braid and or a fairly stout rod. Either the CRR 873 NRX or the JWR 894 will make you very happy, but I'd get the 894 myself...

Gary, do you know why the CRR 873 is not offered in the GLX lineup? That seems like a missed opportunity to me.

I agree with Gary about the Conquest 844c. It is an awesome jig rod and because of the fast taper, spiral x, and other technology, it is extremely versatile. I know it is expensive, but I’ve always felt that if you are going spend big money anywhere, it ought to be on your primary jig and worm rod. I have a 844c, 843c and a 842s. I highly recommend them.

I do not know. The NRX version is a fantastic rod though. Funny though, the 894 is still a better C-rig rod than the 873 to me

It also seems like the new Shimano Expride Heavy action would be a good fit for the OP... The exprides are very sensitive imo, and the tapers more fast/mod-fast making them good jig rod candidates.
