Buying a used out-of-state boat - Lesson learned

I bought another Basscat from a great guy in Virginia on 28 Nov. The boat had a lien on it. His bank is in Nebraska. It took until the first of the year to get the title from his bank. I then had to send the title to the previous owner to get it signed. I took the signed title and all the paperwork to TPWD yesterday to get registration. I had to pay $150 in late registration fees yesterday because TPWD only gives you 20 days from the date of purchase to register your boat/motor. Lesson learned - if I do this route again I will manipulate the sales paperwork to show in the 20 day window. Just wanted to pass this along.

Good info. I could never buy a boat with a lien or out of state. I have a strong policy on being present with the buyer/seller to transfer anything with a title. Boat, car, trailer, etc. I hope everything went smooth, otherwise. Any pics yet?

For those interested, Reclending is the way to go. I sold a boat with a lein on it and the payoff amount went straight to my credit union. The balance to me. It was very easy for buyer and seller.

Everything went great with the seller as he was outstanding. I even stayed at his house in VA. A lot of back and forth between me and my bank, USAA and TPWD to make sure I had everything I needed. Can't figure out how to post a pic.

Interesting. Did the buyer finance through Reclending or did they just handle the transaction for you?

Sweet rig. Out of state is a pain, I’ve done it twice.

I would say it was worth the trouble if the price made you happy. Pretty rig!
