1997 Johnson 225 Venom Lower Unit down

So it seems that my lower unit locked up. I was out checking out the boat because of a previous issue. I had it up and rolling pretty good. Then I came off the throttle and things siezed up.

i just pulled the plugs and I didn’t see anything odd. I then dropped the lower and the motor turned over freely. I the did a cold compression check and all six were consistent and even. So I think the motor may be ok.

Of of course this means that my lower is in need of attention. I do run a coned and pinned lower.

The question is are the parts still available to rebuild these older units? This is assuming that the case is still serviceable.

They told me that they do not work on units that old. They did have a nice STV with a "modified" etec / shortened mid section / sportsmaster.

I think that I am going to send it off to gearcaseman. Now I just have to figure out how to package it. I am thinking of building a crate of sorts..

Pull your drive shaft and shift rod off the case that helps the dimensions. then you can pack it in the box. Call Eddie and see if he even needs them for the rebuild.

Wow that's odd. They do any work on mine anytime I've taken it in. I just talked to Acie today at the boat show.

It's in the one stop shopping sticky at the top of the forum. He's currently on the mend from knee replacement surgery.

Easy question, then..... how do I pull the drive shaft? I assume I just unscrew the shift rod....

You unscrew the shift rod, and then if you have a dealer nearby have him pull the drive shaft for you. Other wise you can use a slide hammer to remove it. There is a special tool that clamps on the indention of the drive shaft and has two bolts on either side that apply upward pressure and it lifts the upper drive shaft out of the clip from the lower drive shaft. You can invert the gearcase and slip an object up the driveshaft and then use a large pair of vice grips and slide the object down onto the vice grips giving downward pressure this will also remove the upper drive shaft but that isn't the suggested way to do it.
