    Did I blow my motor??

I think I near blew my engine!

Left the dock today after letting the engine heat up. Got up on plane and thirty seconds later the motor lost power. Was only running about 3500 rpms.

After that I got it up on plane again. Shortly after it shut down and I heard some clinking while falling into the hole.

Did a weak idle back to the ramp.

Any ideas what could be going wrong? I'm thinking it's a powerhead problem that's not worth fixing but who knows. Engine is a Johnson gt-150.

    Thanks

My motor did the same thing about 2 weeks ago. Almost exactly to the T. I have a 225 evinrude HO.

I pulled my spark plugs and #2 cylinder plug had aluminum on it and had hole in piston. Pull your plugs and look in there with flashlight, that's what I did. Made me sick when I seen it. I hope in your case that's not the problem.

Pull your plugs/inspect plugs and do a compression check and report back..

Plugs looked ok. 6, and especially 5 had a lot of carbon buildup.

I don't have a gauge at home. Will have to take to the shop.

Buying a gauge and doing it at home will be cheaper than taking it in... not to mention quicker

Any recommendations on one to buy? Preferably from a place like AutoZone.

Also, do the cylinders need to be warm to do the test?

You can do a cold test just to make sure you don't have major damage. Most auto parts places will loan tools with a deposit.

I got one from O'Reileys for 25-30$. I'm sure Autozone has them.

When you do the comp test be sure to hold the throttle plates open. The test is much more accurate and will show more variation.

maybe but he wants to know if it's blown. Won't be hard to tell with a simple comp test.

Or at least significantly lower. If all 6 are close to the same he can start looking for other issues but first thing I would do is pull the plugs and check comp. Easy to do and will give him an idea and something to post here for people to begin helping him
