    Carpet removal with Xylene

I read on several posts that Xylene is great to remove old carpet. Do you dilute the Xylene at all to dissolve the old adhesive and remove the carpet? If you do what is the ratio i.e. 4oz per quart? Thanks

I used it straight from can, very toxic though. Use in a highly ventilated room. Soaked a rag placed on carpet. Come right off no scrapping. Used a rotary sanding pad to clean off any glue left over. Worked like a charm.

My two cents worth is pull the carpet by hand if you can with no solvents. Keep it as a template for cutting the new carpet. Scrape any old glue with a dull hand scraper. Anything left use a hand grinder with a very old or very light grinding pad. Old glue will be very easy to get off with the grinder. It will make a mess, so do it outside. I would only grind on areas where carpet will go. Anything left don’t worry about. Use contact cement and glue to anything that is remaining.
