Blew my motor. What route to go now?

2003 Triton TR-21. Yamaha 225 OX66. Hole in the block, it's toast. Unfortunately I only get to fish about 20 - 25 days a year typically due to work and family. Boat is in good shape and more than I need - I installed new seats, carpet, Ultrex and dual 10" HB Helix. I've owned it for 8 years and been paid off for 6 years. I obviously do not tournament fish and won't for at least 10 years. The way I see it, I have 3 options.

Option 1: Rebuild. Luckily I live 3 hours from Hydro Tec Marine who seems to be one of, if not the best rebuilders of Yamahas. Roughly $6k.

Option 2: Brand new 225 SHO. I've heard around $17k.

Option 3: Sell / Trade in boat as is and keep my Ultrex / Humminbirds. A 21 footer is not an option. I honestly never really drive much over 60 so I thought about moving to a 19 footer with a 150 / 175. Would probably be looking in the $30k range not including my trade. Not sure the wife will go for this anyways.

I am pretty happy with the boat so I doubt going to something new or newer w/ motor warranty for a few years is the best route. However I have concerns with putting $6k into an 03 motor. Same with hanging a $17k motor on an 03 boat. I don't plan on selling it in the near future. Just looking for your guy's thoughts. Thanks

    Re power

I love my hull, added an Ultrex and the electrics I want. I have more in the boat than I can sell for with the upgrades, but it's mine, it's paid for and I like it.

I decided if something ever happened I would just re power and sell at the end of warrenty .

Oh and I'd be thrilled to get 25 days a year on the water and I tournament fish.

I would hang a new f225 off the back. The grey motor. I am not a huge fan of imports but there is no sense in changing the controls and the grey models have a stellar reputation.

If my 06 hpdi 250 blows I will probably replace with a 250 sho. Maybe even look into a 250 merc. I'm at a point right now thinking this is my last boat. If you're planning to keep your boat another 10 to 15 years I would put a new engine on it. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

I plan to repower my 07 Sabre FTD if the Opti ever gives up the ghost.
New motor with warranty on a mint condition older boat I love. It’s paid for. A new motor, and other upgrades are much cheaper than a new boat.

if i was in your situation i would rebuild. with you only getting to fish every other weekend i don’t think you would get the return on the investment of a new motor. and on top of that i THINK i have read on here that after a hydro tec rebuild the motor is pretty much bulletproof!

You said you probably wouldn't be tournament fishing for at least 10 more years. You are fishing only 20 to 25 days per year.A good rebuild from Hydro Tec is all you need. The OX66 engines are usually bullet proof.Good luck to you

If a dealer would give you a fair trade it would be tempting. But if I rebuilt my old boat I would have a lot less debt...

In this case I'd think HydroTec would be your best bet.

$17,000 new engine - $6,000 HydroTech rebuild = Excellent HydroTech Powerhead + $11,000 you can use elsewhere if needed
