I use Pennsoil semi-synthetic (Premium Plus) in my Johnson 225. It runs great on it with no issues. I can get it locally for $15.99 per gal. All carbureted motors will smoke some on start up.

When was the last time the engine was decarbed? Any dino oil or semi syn oil you should still decarb once a year or every 100 hours.....it keeps the engine healthy.
