Usually that is the result of the Nut not being torqued tight enough... it allows the thrust washer to wallow out which leads to prop/case contact.

That's a known issue for those motors. It'll run you around $150 for replacement at most dealers. I got into the habit of tightening regularly and spinning the prop by hand before and after every trip. I've heard there is a stainless replacement but I never looked into it. If you hear or feel anything different when turn by hand you need to address it right away. If you Google it you'll see a lot of post and info on it.

There is a new two piece thrust washer to help with this problem. The are spendy, like $160. Order it from SIM Yamaha or Boats.net for a better price.

The new 2 piece has the same issues. I've replaced 2 of them in 4 years.

The key here guys is to keep them tight. Check them often. I have made it a habit to remove, clean, inspect (for wear/fishing line/ect), re-grease and then re-install my prop/hub/thrust washer once a month. Sounds like a lot but not hard if you keep a box with all the right tools and grease handy like I do, can be done in 5 minutes. Also the peace of mind is worth it to me, but I am an over-maintenance type of guy.

Good deal, least you caught it before it got expensive and now know what to look for and how to prevent it from happening again

BTW standard flo-torq I'd use 55-60 lbs/ft or if using the optional forward cone bushing (which i suggest using) is 90-100lbs/ft

Not familiar with that prop, does it utilize the square bore flo-torq style hub, or a pressed hub? If pressed I dont know the torque spec, but whatever it is I would go on the tight side and keep and eye on it

I went through three lower units, all warranty, for the same issue. Bad thrust washers. Finally, Yamaha sent a thurst washer special order from Japan on the third one. I havnt had an issue for the past nine years now.
