Don't know. When my '98 efi cut loose, the tech said it was due to the plastic rod bearing cage failing. I'd post the question on the Merc Hi Performance forum.

I talked to the business owner that rebuilt my engine. He said he most likely installed steel caged bearings in it, but didn’t actually remember since it was about seven years ago. He said the plastic caged bearings aren’t really something to worry about as long as you keep it below 6000 RPM.
Make that 5900 rpms and stay closer to 5800. I used to run mine between 5900 and 6000, and it ran fine for 8 years.
can't speak for the mercury, but i know the evinrude likes to run high - i think i'm 2.75 below on my current setup - my old setup (Johnson 200) i was running 3.25 to 3. Original raker on the old motor was the ticket - i ran 62-64 with that, but the motor got old and it would only run 57 with a load and 60 when it was cold and i was alone. new setup runs 67 full load and partner in the summer and it will run 69 in the fall. It will go 70 with just me in it when it is cooler out.

What is your current setup now? I have an r91 w a Evinrude 200 HO G1 set at 3.5 ptp with a 6 inch plate. Spinning a 26 raker ho but has some dings in it and needs to be worked. Having trouble with blowout on holsehot and doesn't like a heavy load. Best I've gotten is 67 with 2 guys loaded in the cold and 68 by myself light load in the summer.
