I built this one about 4 years ago. I build 4-5 rods per years, mainly for my own use. I used yellow pine and ended up with about $15 in the wrapper. http://www.steelheader.net/Rodbuildi...wn_rod_jig.htm.
For a motor to turn the rod while the finish sets I bought a table top "disco ball" light from a party supply retailer. Took the ball off and the motor turned about 12 revolutions per minute. I bought the one that plugs into electric. This one runs on batteries http://www.partycity.com/product/min...h&navSet=disco light&bypass_redirect=1.

Thank You Bradvan for the information

bradvan, I like your version of the thread tensioner, gonna try to modify mine soon. Thanks for that tip...BF
BTW, a hole saw makes great washers.

I forgot to add that I lengthened the base to 36 inches when I built mine. It gives me more room between the rod rests. I also added a tension rod kind of like this http://www.mudhole.com/Spare-Tension...Wrapper-HWS-TR.
I built my tension rod out of a spring from the hardware store, glued an old guide to the end for the thread to go through.

BRADVAN What chuck did you use and how did you attach it to the motor?

I did not use a "chuck". I disassembled the "disco ball" base allowing me to remove the ball from the approximately 1 inch diameter shaft that on the other end was attached to the actual motor that turned it. I then extended that shaft with some plastic tubing that press fit and glued. To use I tape the motor to one of the wrapping rests, and center and tape the butt of the rod to the tubing. Just as a clarification, I turn the blank by hand when wrapping eyes, hookkeepers, etc.
