    Laken's 2017 deer

My daughter and I hunted opening morning for four hours and didn't see a deer. We did shoot a coyote.

Wednesday morning was the next time she was able to hunt. We saw 2 one-horned bucks, a coyote and two beagles that were running all over my farm.

Laken had to go to her mother's Thanksgiving dinner at 5:00 so we got into the stand at 1:15. Planning on hunting until 3:30. This was going to be the last time she could hunt. At 3:21, this beautiful young nine pointer walked by. She made a nice shot with the old Remington 742 in .30-06. Buck ran 50 yards and fell over.

After the shot Laken told me she was nervous and could feel her heartbeat in her throat. Told her that's why we hunt... It was a great day.

Thanks. Just a deer, But good day with my little girl (even though she turns 25 in January and is getting married in February).

First photo was taken with my iPhone 5s with a timer. Second photo was taken with her iPhone 8 in portrait mode. Love the way the portrait mode makes photos look, but you have to be careful or it will "blur out" part of the rack.

A memory that can't ever be taken away from either of you! No greater feeling as a Hunter.

My daughter killed her first buck last year at age 13. She is paralyzed from the knees down so all of our hunting together is out of box stands. When the buck came out chasing the doe I sat her in my lap to give her extra support. I stopped the buck and told her to take a deep breathe and hold it, then slowly squeeze. She said,"I can't hold steady." I said, why? And what you said about your daughters heart beating in her throat reminds me of the words I'll never forget that my daughter quietly yelled at me. She said, "If I'm gonna kill this deer you're gonna have to calm your heart beat down, it's making the gun shake with every beat!" I was more nervous and excited than she was. I quickly gathered myself and she made a perfect shot. Then she said, "Now my heart is beating like yours!" I pray to God I'll never forget that day or feeling.

I remember every trip with my kids while the only hunts I remember alone are the one that were successful.

    Nice! Congrats to her.

I guess she'll have to wait 'til next year to pop one with the 7mm-08. Is it set-up and ready to go yet?

Yes, scope is mounted and ammo bought. I am going to try to get it sighted in this weekend. I want to get her comfortable shooting of a shooting stick before next year. I also want her to get comfortable and have the confidence to take a 200 yard shot.

Like I posted earlier, she is getting married in February. Last night we went to Dick's Sporting Goods so she could buy her fiancé a Nikon ProStaff scope and box of .308 Hornady for the T/C compass rifle I am giving him for Christmas.

He is a lucky young man. She graduated with her Masters from UK with a 4.0 and has a job. And enjoys sports, hunting, fishing and the occasional beer.
