I have a 176 champ and i cut the cross brace with no ill effects, when installing a pedal tray...some say the tray makes that area stronger...

Not sure about Champions but Chargers have the same brace I was told it was for removing the cap from the mold not deck support.
My 1995 181 did not have any support under the deck when I installed my tray.
I was able to remove a switch panel and put my phone in the hole and take a picture before I cut.

My 2000 187 had a pvc tube containing the wires to the front trim switch. I sawed through it, dug out the foam, then redid the wires to hang beneath the tray. That was all I had to do and I suspect a 2001 193 would be similar. No braces or other supports.
