Removed my lower unit to replace impeller....

found a spring that is about the size and shape of my wedding ring loose around the bottom of the crank shaft. Does that mean my upper seal is bad or did it just slip off?

Does anyone know the name of that spring?

    Thanks

I figured out that it is the lower crankshaft seal tension spring. It is not leaking oil though

1st time posting in the motors section -

    Serial # 0T897354 2003 Mercury 4 stroke 9.9 hp

Any advice on whether it is safe to leave that spring off since it is not leaking oil? The spring does not seem very strong

I would not recommend running with a known-damaged lower crank seal. If a leak develops at that seal, the majority of the engine oil may be lost in a VERY short period of time.
