Question What backing are you using to support...

...your console when installing these heavy fish finders?

Using a new ram Mount with my new Helix 10. Didn't have a problem with the Helix 7 since it is pretty light. But the Ram and Helix 10 weigh a ton and my fiberglass console is not that thick and will probably crack if I don't use a backing plate.

I am using 3/8" Canvas Phenolic because I got scraps for NADA.

I have also used Aluminum plate on installs too.

I built a frame using 1 inch aluminum tubing and aluminum angle, held by stainless bolts. Front is 1/2" HDPE with dual mount bolted through it into the frame. Frame is attached to console and everything is very solid. I did this because my older TR21X was never designed for larger units, I run dual 10's on the console currently.

"Plexiglass" is cast acrylic sheet (often cracks when drilled thru) - IMO (Lexan aka) poly-carbonate sheet is much less brittle and considerably more stout.

It's what they use for "bullet proof glass".

I used 1/8" aluminum sheet to make a backing plate/ring for my Helix 12 and Ram Mount.

The Precision Sonar backplate looks to be just as well built as the front plate. Quality stuff.

Go to Walmart and buy the large white plastic cutting board. Very cheap and it has the perfect amount of flex and pliability for backing, drilling into, and getting screws to hold. Works great in all kinds of spots around the boat. I use it all the time.
