    Extended idling

Does idling an engine at 5mph for an hour hurt it? The engine in question is a Mercury 115 ProXS CT. Mapping with Autochart Live.

As long as it is broke in completely I would assume it would love that.

Pretty much all 4 stroke engines let some fuel pass the rings into the oil. Those that are broke in properly and the rings seated well minimize this, but it still happens. Now plenty of long runs which heat the oil up well will evaporate the fuel out of the oil and prevent a problem. But lots of idling without also making long runs can lead to a problem. So if your that kind of operator, keep a close check on your oil level. If it starts to climb up the stick and goes over the full mark just accept that you are going to have to do oil changes more frequently than the recommended interval of 100 hours or once a year.

    Good info in #3 (above).

Good rule of thumb is to make sure you're getting out for a nice long mid-to-high RPM run during each outing (near the end of the outing is even better).
