I tell you one thing, you don't want your kids in JCPS - never have I seen such a bunch a drama with that outfit, especially with their school bus program and lottery system on where your kids end up attending. Worst school district in the state. Anyone in Jefferson County ends up sending their kids to private school for around $1,000 a month per kid....that's why so many on here are recommending areas outside of Jefferson County like Oldham or Spencer as those public schools are decent. But with everyone wanting to be outside of Jefferson Co but still in KY, you end up with a ton of congestion in the Oldham and Spencer County areas. I'm telling you, Indiana is the answer.

I weighed all the options, visited schools, know people with kids in the various schools, and the little Lanesville School District impressed me the most. Their statistics blew everyone else away. Of course, if your kids want to play football they'll be disappointed because Lanesville doesn't have football, have to go to Corydon for that. We bought a house in the Lanesville School District, were there for almost two years and our oldest was about to start school, but I found an opportunity near KY Lake that I couldn't pass that up so we moved again. Anyhow, I would seriously urge you to consider Lanesville or even Corydon. I absolutely loved the small town of Lanesville, kind of like Mayberry really, Corydon is the same way. Lanesville and Corydon are in Harrison County, which has a casino, meaning that the county receives a lot money from that casino which equates to great roads and bridges, great schools, great YMCA, great public programs, CHEAP taxes, and on and on and on. I lived in Louisville for 11 years, and Indiana for 2. My only regret in those years was that I hadn't considered moving to Indiana sooner after I discovered what all I had been missing. Indiana is just more fun if you're an outdoors person. Heck, in Indiana, you can pay a small fee and get a permit to ride your 4-wheeler or side-by-side on any County Road, talk about FUN!!!!

Didn't seem any worse than the annual taxes on them in Kentucky. I thought TN was really screwy and expensive on vehicles according to my sister who lives in TN.

Vehicle reg cheap in TN. The renewal on my new Tundra was $150. Indiana would have been over $400. By boat reg is $71 for 3 years.

Comparing KY, TN, and IN boat and vehicle registrations is like apples and oranges. You get screwed no matter what, just the delivery of the screwing is different.

I will probably be back in a couple weeks, I usually just cab it to the hotel because all I do is work while I'm there, unless my guys make me buy them dinner somewhere away from downtown, then they drag me out somewhere... Football is pretty much a must have for my oldest, and youth sports are important for my youngest, including football and baseball and wrestling... My middle son is a baseball kid and we can find that pretty much anywhere... Other than that, good schools and outdoor opportunities are really important. Our kids are public school kids here in an excellent district, wife won't let us take a step back with that and I don't feel like paying for private unless really necessary... Next time I'm there, I'll get a car and get out a lot more...

I'm interested. Clear as a bell that Tn is much cheaper on most everything. In. being second and as usual Ky breaking it off in everyone concerning taxes. Biggest joke/egg in face of an administration this state has ever seen currently!

Might want to check out the Georgetown area in Indiana and get in the Floyd Central school District. Georgetown is still a small town and Floyd Central has a great Athletics Dept.

Do you have any idea what part of town your business will be located in? That in itself will help to lead you in the right direction. If your business is on the far south side of town, then the options are or should be quite different than if your office is going to be on the East end of Louisville. I have never lived in Indiana, but I have to say that I am leaning toward what Scott is saying about Indiana. Both Clarksville and New Albany are nice towns with anything you need for shopping and the school systems over there are far better than Louisville from what I understand. My stomach is still in knots over registering my son for Kindergarten next year. The school system for Jefferson county is atrocious in so many ways. They have the largest budget of the state (over 1 Billion per year) and as a whole, are poor schools with the amount of resource available. The upper middle class pay 10-15k year in some cases to send their children to private schools. We could go on and on about the schools though.
The next question I think would be how far are you comfortable and willing to commute? There are several saying Oldham Co but if your office is anywhere on the South side of town, that's a long drive. And anyone in Louisville knows and has been a victim of how awful the traffic is at the 71/265 interchange. Add an accident anywhere along 71 (which is very common) and you will have to adjust your day. With the East side bridge open now, Indiana is far more appealing in my eyes. If your office is on the South side of town, Elizabethtown would be one of my top picks. Its about 30 minutes to the 65/265 interchange of 70mph 3 lane highway. E-Town is booming right now. Big time! The school systems are great and the community has anything you will need as far as shopping. Taylorsville was mentioned and it is indeed a great rural area with pretty good schools but that commute can be miserable. 2 lane road in and out and the 265/64 interchange is always shitty in the am rush and afternoon rush. Also keep in mind that Taylorsville is far more rural than any of the previous mentioned cities. They have one grocery and it's probably 20-30% more than Kroger. (if not more than that) There is not an option for stuff like a Lowe's/Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or any big box retail. Any of the larger retail places are 20-30+ minutes whether you go to Bardstown or Louisville. Last...I'm a bit surprised nobody mentioned Nelson County/Bardstown. That is a nice community with a city that is growing rapidly and is surrounded with potential for more growth based around the Bourbon industry as well as tier 1, 2, and 3 automotive mfg factories. They've been in the news recently for some pretty awful stuff but that is not a painted picture of what the town is like as a whole. It will also have plenty of the necessity type big box retail and also has a good selection of restaurants. Last...the new road is open now and it makes the commute much more friendly.
    In summary for my thoughts and opinion;
Elizabethtown if your office is on the South side of town or relatively close. About a 30 minute drive to the Hwy interchanges of Louisville and 45 min to about anywhere in town with average traffic.
Bardstown: About the same as E-Town. It's a little East of Elizabethtown and the commute is about the same as E-town but could be shorter depending if you go to the Cox's Creek area of Nelson County. (It would be my top pick if a 45 minute commute as a worst case scenario (most of the time) was ok with you and the wife)
Southern Indiana would be my 2nd. It's a great area almost anywhere you choose. I don't like the added cost of crossing the bridge each way every day or to run an errand for something that would be in Louisville. Rarely does a person in Louisville HAVE to cross the bridge for an errand. I think it would be a little different for Indiana residents?
Taylorsville is great town but very rural and a loaded gun as far as traffic and drawback being the commute for any retail needs.
My personal desire for Oldham County has dropped a great deal since the schools have been diluted quite a bit by the Louisville flight of folks fleeing due to the schools. Add that to the traffic issue that is very common and I just can't make myself like that option anymore.
Shelby County was also mentioned and is a nice community. Has necessity retail options and the commute would not be bad to the East end of town. A lot of people have called it little mexico due to the Hispanic population growing so rapidly. They have a lot of migrant farming workers in the community for ag and equine.

Once the school assignments are made, I'll be making a decision as to if I will remain a Louisville resident or not. Good luck on the move, the job, and all the big choices ahead.

Boy after reading Matt's post I think it is best to stay in NE,lol. Schools really come down to staying on top of your childs studies and getting involved. What has been said about JCPS can't be argued but after sending my daughter to Catholic school from 2-8 she is at duPont Manuel an has never been happier.

Im gonna say it again.. Dont forget Mount Washington. You wont have to fool with JCPS bussing or drama. Mount Washington is growing by leaps and bounds and has added I think 4+ different schools to accomodate the influx of students. Depending on what type of environment you desire there are plenty of neighborhoods out a bit that you will have the piece and quiet of the forests etc. Or there are now plenty of high end gated neighborhoods that have homes going 400K+. Crime is low and unless its changed drugs are not nearly as prevelant as what you find in some of the JCPS systems or neighborhoods. When I grew up there we were excited when the first Pizza Hut showed up LOL. Now they have just about everything including a new Showcase Movie theatre. Depending on where you are within Mt.Washington you are roughly 30 minutes from about anything in Louisville.

The only down side I could think of is if you needed to say be in Downtown Louisville at 830-9 am traffic will be a pain depending on where you are and how you go. That however will also be the case if you head to oldem as you will need to either run river road or 64 west.
