1977 85hp Johnson water pump question

I just replaced the water pump in a 1977 85 horsepower Johnson outboard. I wanted to replace it because I noticed when I was running it on the hose that the two exhaust holes that are just below the powerhead we're not spraying out any water, if I remember correctly that usually have at least some spritz coming out of there.

There is a bunch of water coming out of the six small holes on each side of the lower unit as well as water coming through the Hub of the prop.

The old water pump look fine, when I put the new one in there wasn't much change in the amount of water coming out. My question is how much water is usually supposed to come out of those two holes on the top?

You won't get any water until the T stats open. Running on the muffs may not supply enough water. Always better to submerge the lower to test prime.

Where are the thermostats on this motor? Are they below the head where the two white tubes come in from each side?

You have a vernotherm behind that housing and a check valve and spring,,no thermostats....

Yes, they are on the adapter plate. they can be a pain to get at, funny thing is Evinrude had Thermostats, Johnson used the Vernotherm. They both had Tstats in 78.

Okay, thanks for your help, I'm going to dump it in the lake today and see how it works, if it comes out of those two exhaust ports and I'm not going to touch anything.

Funny that Johnson and Evinrude had different things in there. Is the same design? If I pull out the old vernotherm can I replace it with a thermostat?

    Champ,
So water is supposed to come out of the 2 exhaust ports below the cowl as well as the prop and ports on the lower unit? Would this hold true on a V6 175 as well?
