electrical and running isuues
serial # 0G740194 1998 200 mariner efi rebuilt in 2006. About two weeks ago i went fishing, everything running as normal, run about 10 mins down the lake and began idling, let off foot feed and rpms were about half of what they normally are at idle and in gear idle. smoke started coming out of the cowling so i disconnected positive cable. bottom regulator had burned all its wires off and melted on the backside. replaced both regulators and connectors ( battery was replaced 3 weeks earliers with 31 series battery, not deep cycle). took the boat out this morning and idle is still about half of what it should be. throttle is not real responsive. and when the rpms got above 1000 the battery indicator shot over to nearly 15. indicator at idle was 12.5 roughly. where do i start?reposted because i put it in the stock forum.

Verify clean, WRENCH tight connections with regular Locknuts at battery (no wing-nuts).
Verify no melted, browned or blackened connectors at voltage regulators. ANY signs of heat: REPLACE the connectors when replacing BOTH regulators.
Use ONLY OEM MERCURY/QUICKSILVER components. Many of the aftermarket units lack the latest refinements/improvements.
What brand/Part Number did you use?

i used sieera marine regulators. all battery connections are clean and on the nut side of the connector with lock nuts. all connectors are good

Recheck voltage at the battery with a DVOM. If voltage exceeds 14.6 VDC your regulators are not functioning properly.

with engine running at idle or above 1200 rpms?

At ANY RPM (including WOT RPM's).
Need to check all the way across the band to accurately determine.
