    Average hours of depth finder

Is their a guideline for life span of a depth finder? How many hours is too many before you'd buy one?

Nope, it is an electronic device so it may work for twenty years and it may only work for one day after you get it. I have never seen anything in regards to a unit getting to the end of it's life when a certain amount of hours are reached.

Agreed, buddy had one die at 20 hours and I have the same one a 1145 hours as of last week. Same model, there is no correction, only thin is if two units are the same price and shape id aim at the cheaper one, or try to negotiate less $ for the more hour unit.

I personally think the bow units normally do not last as long as the console unit due to the beatings it will take from time to time.

I could see that, makes sense. I have not experienced it yet but can see how it could

Thank you all for the replies. So the reason for asking for hours, or negotiating less money for the one with more hours, is more for peace of mind?
    Like miles on a car?

My #997 Bird has over 3,200 hours on it. Ram mount at console. Purchased new with boat in September of '09. Just starting to have issues this summer. I guess sometimes you can get a good run out of a unit.

The Lowrance units do not have anything that allows you to track hours.

Thats ok because I use it in shallow water and it doesn't have to work that hard .

Ok wait a minute there. 3,200+ hours. And I just hit the 8 year mark, at the time of checking. Works out to just over 400 hours a year. That kind of pans out to 10 full 40 hour work weeks. I'm in Connecticut. So we do freeze our lakes for a few months. Some trips are short quick trips, you know get a couple of hours after work etc. Some days are tournaments...................................
I think I get a fair amount of time on the water. Now I could always use more, but I didn't think that 400 hours a year was bad.
In case you can't tell, I'm laughing while typing this.
