Remember that Mercury says 100 hours or once per year which ever comes first. Had mine done on my 2016 a couple weeks ago, they did oil and filter, LU lube, Pull prop and inspect seal, grease fittings, fuel filter, inspect thermostat (probably means just verified it was operational), inspect plugs, hook to computer and verify diagnostics and look for codes. Water pump impeller is at year 3.

It is an easy job to do yourself. My Yamaha yearly maintenance is maybe a 1 hour job.

Those are indeed the primary items for an ANNUAL (Once per Year, or every 100 Hours, whichever occurs first) service.

My opinion on the water pump interval DIFFERS from what is published on these engine models. For a FISHING application, I would recommend ANNUAL replacement.

Same water pump is used in many other engine models... with an ANNUAL replacement interval. So if you're wondering... that's my reasoning on this. Just don't buy it lasting 3 times as long "just because it's in a fourstroke".

I am curious why would 4 strokes potentially not require it annually?

That's a very good question... for which an engineer apparently has a reason for.

What I can tell you is that we're running the exact same water pump we have been, at the exact same engine RPM's, in the exact same water... only difference is that we now have a lot more rubber and plastic around the exhaust area that you wouldn't want to "melt down".
