Has anyone tried casting retainer putty for blocking off areas in molds?

I have always used plumbers putty, But it falls out and gets thinner as the mold gets hotter. Some of my molds I dont want to permanently block off hooks, weedgaurds etc... I ordered a pound of this stuff to try. I think it's expensive, But think it will work great.

This is a 1 pound chunk of Babbitt Casting Putty and works for temperatures up to 950 Degrees F. For use as damming compound for pouring molten Babbitt, vibration suppression, positioning delicate parts, holding solder while soldering wires on generators, and aids in positioning during welding/brazing. It has extreme temperature resistance, is easily and quickly Removed, remains flexible and holds tight, and it is easily packed in place.

I've used silicone in the past. Works great. Cut out when done. JB weld is more permanent. What you have there looks promising.

I have used permatex high heat rtv silicone for many years, But that is the best permanent fix for me other than epoxy putty. The rtv lets you use different size hooks w/o any flash.

I'm thinking this may be a better product for individual pour sessions.

I've used high temp epoxy in some plastic injection molds. Once I sanded them flat it ruined my molds. Just that light amount of sanding took off enough tolerance between the mold halves that I got flashing all around my baits. Tails that I could easily tear apart no longer could be.

I'm sure that won't happen with a lead mold, but it's worth mentioning.

Based on Mike's recommendation, I tried the Red High Temp RTV silicone...works like a charm!

Good to hear. Is it reusable? I think a pound would last beyond my lifespan lol so I'm looking to split a pound like 4 ways if it truly is reusable.

Thanks Mike. We are modifying some molds to be able to use a single head to do multiple types of baits and I think this is where the CRP will shine.
