If I was in Minnesota I would live on Lake of the Woods. Spent many of nights in a sleeper shack with my son. Did not catch any at night, but next morning all the walleye, and sauger you could handle. Along with huge perch, and monster Northern Pike, that lake is one of my favorite.

Never been ice fishing on lake of the woods. My friends go every year for a weekend in a sleeper shack with their family. Its on my to do list.

They bite at night on Lake of the Woods at times, it's just usually a different bite. If it's late in the season (March) they'll bite just like they do in the daytime until midnight or so before shutting off until about an hour before dawn. Otherwise, I've found that they like to suspend at night. Leaving rattle reels down near the bottom rarely gets anything more than burbot ("eelpout" as they're known in MN), but suspending something halfway in the water column might surprise you....

Didn't see that. 5 above this morning, the backs of bays starting to ice up. And 6 inches of snow.

You can fish all year in a boat in Minnesota you may have to break ice but it is doable.

An uncle of mine is going into his second winter of living in a house boat on the Mississippi in the cities, kinda jealous. And it's neat how they have accessories that prevent the ice from forming around there hulls...
