hydraulic steering turning left takes both hands

when i am at full trim and at 20+ mph i can hardly turn the wheel. this is a 2000 Cobra 17D with 90 HP Mercury fourstroke. i see a canister about the size of an oil filter in the battery compartment. i have no manuals or any experience on this. i purchased this boat as is, all runs fine, straight as an arrow. how do i go about troubleshooting this?

Trim down. That is the short answer, but essentially you are trimmed too high and the prop torque is making it hard to turn

I'm surprised that your boat would have a hydraulic steering. Are you sure? Do you have a cylinder on the front of your motor similar to the one on this web page? http://www.seastarsolutions.com/products/hydraulic-new/
