Well, this inflation calculator says that due to inflation alone, $20,000 in 1980 is the exact equivalent of $63, 115.42 today. 20k in 1990 is the exact equivalent of $38,543.01 today. That might be one reason why.

I would put my 1987 Ragin Cajun against most any bass boat of today as far as construction and quality ( minus of course the wooden transom that had to be replaced a few years ago)

With that being said I would much rather be in my Triton than my Cajun any day of the week due to the sheer size difference and the ride difference

Triton 19 XS Elite, 225 Mercury Pro XS, Minn Kota Ultrex 112, Hydrowave H2, Twin 8' Power Pole Blades, Power Pole CHARGE, Lowrance HDS 12 and 16 at console, Lowrance HDS 9, Garmin LiveScope at bow, Mercmonitor, Rigid Industries Deck lights and other stuff to come that will make me go more broke

You can't compare the boats of today to the boats of yesteryear. In 72, I paid $2K for a 15' Terrybass, stick steering, one pro seat and 50hp. 4yrs later I bought a 15' Hydra around $3500. 1979 a 1500V Basscat for $5K and in 89 a Basscat Caracal (17') for $13,500. I must say as to boat quality, the Caracal was better than the 05 Puma that I now own. It was more solid, no spider cracks in the gel, still had original steering, trailer bunks, carpet, seats when I sold it over 20yrs later. I've posted this to say, the 89 Basscat was the best boat I had in terms quality.
Now, up here, I see all kinds of boats and I see boats that are 3yrs old that looks like they're 20 and boats that are 20, looking like they're 2yrs old. It is all a matter of how you treat it.
    my opinion

I have a 13 yr old Skeeter that's as nice, OR BETTER than most new boats.

Long-term financing and people willing to take out a 20-year note on boats have driven up the price more than anything else. Boat technology (not motors or electronics) has advanced very little. In fact, you can likely go pull the aerator cartridge out of a 25-year-old boat and screw it straight into a 2018 model. Boat manufacturers haven’t been forced to innovate because people will pay $80k for a boat that is eerily similar to a 2000 model.

Its like this if todays $90,000 boat only costs $40,000 then builders would still have to build a $100,000.00 for the serious bass fishermen . I would like to see what boats the elite series pros would be riding in if they had to but a boat like we do , I'm guessing a lot of 18 ft 150 HP .

Which was better? Duh. The 400hp Z06.

    Same with boats.

The old ones are crap. And no amount of "rose colored glasses" is ever gonna make em good.

You hardly see an older boat because they are slow, heavy, water logged, and rotten.
93 or 03? 93 it must've been a ZR1 which would also been the 40th anniversary and if it was a ZR1 40th anniversary model (maroon in color only) it'd be a highly sought after car today. Also Mercury Marine made the engines for those cars which was the LT5.

I can promise you people in the 80's complained about the price of boats, people in the 90's complained about the price of boats, and so forth.

My dad bought a new ranger in 1975. He used to say they would never sell another one when they priced them more than $5k.

I thought that was a 32v Yamaha motor.

and designed by the same folks that designed the SHO Taurus motor from around the same time.

    Im probably wrong.

I am a car guy, but I've also done my share of extracurricular partying through the 80'sand 90's. I'm sure it's why can't remember too much.

My 1997 Ranger 461 was 36k. Pretty sure you can buy a 18 ft boat with a 150 cheaper now.

In sept I ordered a new bodystyle 88 Silverado with 5.7l and auto with velour interior loaded etc. $ 13,500. Price of gold was about $350 oz. ( inflation is the reason )
Following for inflation that boat today would be roughly $32,800 and truck $29,000. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics calculator.

Its inflation mostly. Look at the prices of anything 20 years ago. Bay liner was offering 15 year financing in 1984...long term financing is nothing new. There are more choices of boats today in every price range than ever...Like always however, if you want the flagship of anything, be it a boat, car, house....you are going to pay.
